Hello Kaz,
Found this link for watch radios, http://www.gadgets.co.uk/walkietalkiewatches.html

It may be worth asking Dale TTI about the one your link mentions as I think they are made badged freQuency.
I understand Dales company supply freQuency kit.

Watch radios are usually 49MHz, but it'll be interesting to see what these turn out to be. Battery life won't be up to much!

Yes, i remember reading a review of a walkie talkie watch a while ago, and they were 49 Mhz. However the reviewer said they only had a range of a few metres, despite the specs being for much more (probably around the 250 feet mentioned). They were pretty crappy all round, but then what do you expect for 30 and 2 cm^3 of space, and an antenna only a inch or so long. Definitely just something for the kids.

UHF would make more sense, as the antenna would be far more efficient, but then cost would go up i suppose.

Hi Guys

Heres the exclusive news then - 1st public announcement.

Yes, we are launching a watch style PMR446.

It will be in the shops just before Christmas and we'll make sure that this site gets the first review sample - another exclusive!

To give the best battery life it will use a Lithium Ion cell and have the power reduced to 300mW. The antenna is a fold away type.

It will have the following functions:
8 channels
38 CTCSS
Scan
VOX
Accessory socket

The speaker and mic are built-in and the accessory socket also allows you to use headsets, earmics etc. It's a 3.5mm stereo jack and we have a twin-jack adaptor available if required.

The pack will include a battery, charger and earbud style mic. We're currently finalising the packaging - so we cant say whether it will be a single or a twin-pack product. What do you guys think?

Sizewise it's about that of a matchbox - maybe a little larger. However, the display is a considerable part of the design so it is very useable.

Oh - it also tells the time too!

If you have any questions or comments I'll try to answer them - however, for commercial reasons I may be a little vague at this time.

Battery life, schmattery life - I want one!

I have a confession to make, I did actually know about this a few days ago, but was sworn to secrecy by TTi and I promised I wouldn't say a word.

As I said to Dale at the time:-

"Where was this kind of hardware when we were kids???!!"

But, people, there's still time!

Quick question to the hams among us - guestimation as to range given the 300mw power reduction please. How much of a drop at the horizon in dB does that give assuming equal antennas? (AndyJE, flex your muscles! lol).

In open-space playing fields (and school playgrounds) should be more than sufficient? The ultimate hide and seek secret weapon?

Difficult call that one - can you do both and offer a discount for buying a pair?

If it has to be one or other for reasons of packaging cost, personally I would say sell individually as they will work with other radios at the end of the day - no need to be a matched pair.

Dale - technical question if you're able to answer: What is the mAh capacity of the Li-Ion cell?

300mW is similar to the drop you get using NiMH instead of alkalines, in this case 2.2dB - not likely to be noticeable (many sets with a reputation for being sensitive actually have a few dB less sensitivity than many others!). The antenna is more important.

I was thinking yesterday how the vast majority of 446 use is likely to be amongst groups of people relatively close, and the usual 500mW is overkill. Save 10dB by using a 50mW low power setting, and you'd get one heck of an improvement in battery life. The european 433MHz system that only has a 10mW limit has still sold well, for example. I think every 446 should have a high/low power setting - especially in a watch where the replacement battery is unlikely to be very cheap.

Sounds very cool, and I'll definitely buy one. Make sure it is out for Xmas, as I'll want to take one snowboarding in February!

The single/twin thing depends on price, of course. And to be honest, I woudln't care if it came wrapped in newspaper, as long as it functioned well.

Also, if I need longer range or ant to conserve it's small battery capacity, I'll get one of my other PMRs out of my rucksack, but the convenience of having it on your wrist is just too much to turn down. Great for RX, so low squelch please!

Good list of extras too, please make this product happen!

I can now confirm that the battery capacity is 540mAh at 3.7V - so duration should be pretty good I think.

I agree Andy, that would be a good idea - 10mW would suffice for a lot of the time.

Li-Ion have a pretty good life though - the one in our office laptop is still going strong after 2 years +.

Thanks Dale.

Say roughly 500mW power useage to get 300mW RF (a total guess as to efficiency at ~60%):-

500mW/3.6v = 139mA on transmit.

So a bit under 4 hours talk time on a full charge... not bad.

One thing from that FRS wrist radio that I'd like to see on the PMR446 version, is the over ear boom mike accessory. Simple thing, but I have a dislike of the basic earpiece/bead mike jobbies. Largely, because when you see folks using them, they end up holding the bead mike near their mouth, as their words don't come out of a hole on one side of their neck. Of course, if you have to hold the mike, it's not exactly fulfilling the role of being 'hands free'!

So, if the lead on the over ear is long enough to travel up a sleeve, and emerge from a collar to the ear, that would be top notch.

Hitting the US price point would be tops too, and if the appearance was similar, I'd be quite happy.

If you want to be the first person to get your hands on this hot product then use the Maplin web site to send you an e-mail when stock hits. On the website, drop N18BF in the search box, this will take you to the product and scroll down to the end of the page and hit the relevant box - simple.

I'll be glad on any reviews or comments.

Thanks

Great, thanks for the info Lee.

We're all very very interested in this product.

There will be a review in progress the second one drops through my door!
